La Filipina (The Filipina)

La Filipina (The Filipina)

2018

Graphite, carbon and ink

In my self-portrait, "La Filipina", I stand poised and proud, with my hands on my hips and my eyes fixed confidently upon the viewer. The dress and pose I adopt are reminiscent of the noble traditions of Spanish culture, while the title itself is a bold assertion of my identity as a Filipina. Through this work, I seek to dispel the negative stereotypes that have long oppressed my people, and to replace them with a vision of dignity, resilience, and strength.

My self-portrait drawing study is a sincere attempt to capture a moment of introspection as an emerging artist, reflecting on my own artistic identity and the challenges I face. I offer this work as a personal self-exploration, a reflection of the raw emotion and vulnerability that comes with creative expression.
